A Prayer for Mother’s Day

By Charlotte Phillips

Dear Lord,

Today we give you thanks for our mothers.

For the mothers who birthed us from their wombs, and for the mothers who birthed us from their hearts, we give you thanks.

For all the women in our lives who have mothered us – grandmothers, godmothers, aunts, friends and the other special “mother” figures in our lives, we give you thanks.

For their loving embraces and smiles of pride, we give you thanks.

For their firm suggestions and gentle pushes, we give you thanks.

For wiping our skinned knees and for drying our crying eyes, we give you thanks.

For their encouragement when we are down and for holding our hands when we are afraid, we give you thanks.

For their sacrifices, tears, worries and love, we give you thanks.

Lord, we also ask for Mary’s gentle and loving embrace for those grieving the loss of their mothers, and for those struggling to become mothers. We pray they always remember they are loved and not alone in their sadness and grief.

We give you thanks, Lord, for Mary, Mother of God, and our mother, too.

For her yes to carrying and birthing Jesus, Son of God, we give you thanks.

For her wonderful example and motherly love, we give you thanks.

We offer this prayer in your name. Amen.
