Modern tradition of Advent

By Kristy Solis

The Advent season is upon us – the preparation of the arrival or coming of Jesus. It’s my children’s favorite time of the year.

Our family tradition of Advent consists of the arrival of their elves with their Advent calendars. Modern day Christmas meets the true meaning of Christmas. “Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy” (1 Corinthians 14:1).

The elves have become part of our family in the celebration of the Advent period and the celebration of the coming of Jesus. My children understand that Jesus is the ultimate reason for the season. “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).

To the children, the elves represent the good and the joy of the Christmas celebration, which is reflected in helping them prepare for the coming of Jesus.

Lord, hear our prayers and help us to instill in our children the true meaning of the Advent season. Remind us that this special time represents hope and mystery, anticipation, preparation for this world and the next and for a king’s coming when we least expect.

These are special times when heaven touches the earth. Open our eyes and hearts this season during this time of hope for the world.
