Did you Know Children are Pro Life?

By Ana Borden

I had encouraged all of our children to feel their siblings kick, hiccup and even put their ear against my growing belly as often as they liked while pregnant with our growing family.

Giggles always erupted, captivating smiles, as well as anticipation and joy about meeting their future playmate.

“MaMa, he moved so much and he still does!” was a recent statement our oldest mentioned while recounting her memory of our youngest in my womb.

I am always in awe of their attention and gladness when they see their sonogram and as I recount their unique traits in “MaMa’s tummy,” especially the connection to their personalities today: from the early riser, to the comedian, to the strong kicker and, last but not least, the punctual one who loves schedules.

As I reread the individual journals that I kept during my pregnancies with each of our children, it is truly incredible how I already “knew” them before they were finally in my arms.

My reflections of our children during each pregnancy always lead my thoughts to the versus, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:4-5).

From their sense of touch, hearing and sight, they only “see” a smaller version of themselves – a baby in their mother’s womb who is breathing, hiccupping, moving, sleeping, even smiling and sucking their thumb that also feels pain, just like them.

At these tender young ages, children, through their experiences and connections just like these, understand and are witnesses to the truth – that life begins in the womb. So how can one justify and explain otherwise what God is revealing right in front of them?

As parents, how do you help your children continue to see the truth? And, how do you support and encourage your children to speak up for the babies still growing and learning in their mothers’ wombs?
